Action Australia excerpt...
“Hugo, pull harder!”
“I am. She’s not moving. She’s gunna drown!”
I pulled so hard my muscles burned but Granny slipped back into the water. She couldn’t get out. It was hopeless.
“Stop please,” she pleaded. “The rope’s cutting me.”
Granny was breathless and she’d started to cry. She’d gone all saggy from struggling.
“Hold the rope, John. Keep it tight. I’ll ride for help.”
John nodded, wound the rope around his waist and lay on the ground. No way could Granny drag him into the dam – not him.
I raced the motor bike over the paddocks, up the embankment of a creek, across ditches, around trees and over wombat holes. Twice I almost tipped over.
